Meet The Band
backwater blues band

The Backwater Blues Band is one of San Diego's premier Blues Bands ~ performing a broad spectrum of authentic Rock & Blues, Soul Blues, Funk Blues, Originals, Classic Rock Blues, and R&B. As a foremost San Diego band, they have performed everywhere up and down the coast from Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach to world-class events, festivals and international Blues Cruises.

The band members have a long history of playing with some of San Diego's best Blues Musicians…Johnny Vernazza, Robin Henkel, Charles Burton, Len Rainey and Michele Lundeen…just to mention a few. The band has been honored to support internationally renowned artists such as John Nemeth, "Mighty Mike" Schermer and the late Ike Turner.

The Backwater Blues Band was established in 1996. Currently the Band consists of full time artists:

jimmy woodard Jim Wodard  Guitarest & singer songwriter of the Backwater Blues Band since 2012, Jimmy Woodard has been "Payin Dues" with and Singin' the Blues for a good long while.Originally from Corpus Christi Texas, he started playing  on a guitar purchased with S&H Green Stamps at the age of  ten and by the age of 16 was standing at the foot of a stage watching Freddie King. This started a fire which led to endless wood shedding with Blues and Jazz records and study with any and everyone he could find. After studying music at Texas A&I in Kingsville Texas and playing in some local bands and the College Stage Band, he moved to Southern California in 1978. After studying at the Dick Grove Music Workshop in Studio City Calif, Jim settled in North County San Diego and began a long standing relationship with The Belly Up Tavern. The Belly Up is known for bringing in National Blues artists and gave Jimmy the opportunity to back up such artists as Big Joe Turner, Jimmy Witherspoon,Lowell Fulson, Pee Wee Crayton, Big Mama Thornton, Charlie Mussellwhite,Smokey Wilson and Bo Diddley. He was  also able to play along side some of the young players coming down from LA like Hollywood Fats William Clarke and Kid Ramos. It was there  Jims' bands were opening shows for Michael Bloomfield (his last performance) Etta James, Los Lobos, Jr. Walker and the Allstars, Robben Ford, Asleep At The Wheel and Leon Russell. After Joining Forces with Tom Stewart and The Backwater Blues Band , The Backwater Blues Band has opened for Tommy Castro and Tower of Power (twice) and backed up rising stars in the Blues Scene like Mighty Mike Shermer, Kara Grainger,Deanna Bogart, John Nemeth and Catherine Denise. Jim is now focusing on writing original material and showcasing it with Backwater Blues Band.
